"I usually hate mastering. In my experiences of the process, from [the major mastering suites] all the way down to my own efforts, I have found that the mastered product, while more durable across different platforms, doesn't sound as nice as my final pre-master mix did on my own monitors.

My feeling is that your mastering work somehow pulled the somewhat messy sound of the album together significantly. I like all the mastered tracks better than my own mixes. The final result is a significant improvement on the pre-master mix, and has been enthusiastically received by everyone who has heard it.
